Philip José Farmer, né en 1918, devint
célèbre d'un seul coup, en 1952, par la
publication des Amants
étrangers. Cette nouvelle
introduisait le souffle de l'érotisme au sein de la
science-fiction américaine, traditionnellement puribonde. Un
érotisme fortement teinté de poésie et
de préoccupations éthiques: le héros
"farmérien" part à la découverte de
lui-même, il traverse des épreuves et en sort
grandi. Partout sont associées les préoccupations
sexuelles et religieuses: l'oeuvre de Farmer est un hymne à
la libération des corps, une rupture — parfois
douloureuse — avec l'enfance puritaine de l'auteur. Ses
romans — dont certains sont écrits un peu vite
— contrastent avec ses nouvelles, souvent
éblouissantes, comme en témoignent les textes ici
rassemblés.
