The title of
this story was used before by Farmer, as the subititle of the novel Blown
(1969).
Nominated for the Locus
Award (1974 - Best Novella: 4th).
Originally intended as a screen treatment for the Star Trek series.
Philip José Farmer in his foreword: «I don't
remember the
moment when I got the idea. But it must have happened when I was
cursing myself for having forgotten something ... It was a great idea,
but Roddenberry rejected the treatment. His reasons for this were the
same as for "The Shadow of Space".»
DESCRIPTION:
An
alien artifact, the Ball, appears in space and finally orbits Earth. At
first panic arises, but nothing happens with or from it. Then, some
days later something very strange occurs. All around the world everyone
has a four-days' loss of memory. People are confused and angry. Did
this come from the Ball and will it happen again? What are the
consequences?
